Wastewater Treatment
The Town of Ennis operates a wastewater treatment system designed to protect public health and preserve the quality of the Madison River. The system treats wastewater through a lagoon-based process before safely discharging treated effluent under state and federal permit requirements.
How the System Works
Wastewater from homes and businesses is transported through a gravity-fed collection system to the Town’s treatment facility. This natural flow system minimizes the need for pumping and helps ensure efficient, reliable operation.
At the treatment site, wastewater is processed through a series of lagoons. These lagoons use natural and mechanical processes, including aeration, to break down contaminants. The treated water then undergoes ultraviolet (UV) disinfection before being discharged.
Operations & Maintenance
The system is operated and maintained by the Town of Ennis Public Works Department. Staff regularly monitor and maintain the system to ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and to protect the Madison River.
Maintenance and system improvements may involve coordination with contractors, including DLM Contracting Inc., to ensure continued reliability and performance.
Protecting the System
Residents play an important role in maintaining the integrity of the wastewater system. To prevent clogs, damage, and costly repairs, please only flush:
- Wastewater
- Toilet paper
- Approved, septic-safe materials
Items such as wipes (even those labeled “flushable”), grease, chemicals, and other debris should never be disposed of through the sewer system.
