Public Notice to Town of Ennis Residents
4/23/2026
Beginning May 5, 2026, the Town of Ennis Public Works Department, in coordination with Rural Water, will be conducting smoke testing of the sewer system. This routine process helps identify any breaks, leaks, or improper connections in the sewer mains.
During testing, you may see smoke coming from roof vents on homes; this is completely normal and expected. The smoke used is non-toxic, odorless, and safe, similar to what is used in haunted house settings.
What to watch for:
● If you see smoke coming from the ground in your yard, please contact Town Hall as soon
as possible so we can investigate.
● If smoke enters your home, it may indicate a plumbing issue such as a faulty vent or an
improper connection (such as a sump pump connected to the sewer system, which is not
permitted in the Town of Ennis).
If smoke does enter your home:
● Open windows and doors to allow ventilation
● Contact Town Hall so we can pause testing in your area and assist
We will begin testing in East Ennis, followed by the west side of town.
Important: During this time, visible smoke in the area is part of the testing process. Please do not report it as a fire unless you are certain it is unrelated to this work.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we complete this important maintenance to protect and improve our sewer system.
Thank you,
Eric Olson
Public Works Director
Town of Ennis
